Sustainability &

tour Greening Program

When we first started talking about greening the tour, I took a hard look at the many different things that make up our carbon footprint, and came face to face with a truly intimidating truth: every little thing we do matters. I was deeply upset when realizing that I, as an artist, was contributing to the climate crisis by doing one of my favourite things - touring. From how we travel, to what we wear, to where our food comes from - how can we possibly keep track of the tiny decisions we make every single day? Looking at the world this way can feel overwhelming.

Then I realized the other way to interpret this problem: Every tiny decision we make can have a positive outcome. Every action can be an act of hope. Every choice is an opportunity to protect tomorrow. My team and I have worked humbly with climate scientists and youth activists to understand how we can reduce tour emissions, and have developed a program that has allowed us to reduce our carbon impact by 50% per show this tour compared to the last tour, and to further mitigate all other unavoidable emissions to become a climate positive (carbon negative) tour.

No plan is perfect, but we see this as a starting point. We are in a pivotal moment for climate, and it’s crucial to me that our tour is a step in the right direction. I have been empowered by youth leaders and my peers, and I hope our collective choices inspire industries & individuals to prioritize our planet. Let’s continue to grow together.

our plan

For Wonder: The World Tour, we will be reducing our environmental impact and emissions, as well as offsetting our unavoidable carbon footprint, to become a fully climate positive tour.

Alongside green touring partner REVERB.org and climate & tour sustainability experts Hope Solutions, lead by Luke Howell (MSI CEnv FIEMA Chartered Environmentalist, Fellow of IEMA, lifetime in the music and touring industry), we have done a thorough study of our touring practices from top to bottom, and have implemented measures to reduce environmental impacts and carbon emissions by 50% per show compared to Shawn’s previous tour. Of course, even with these practices, a tour can’t be fully sustainable through reduction alone, so we have also committed to a series of programs that will offset and remove carbon to make the tour fully climate positive (carbon negative), along with additional practices to reduce our environmental footprint across the board.

Method

This will be achieved through a combination of efforts in all areas of the tour, including:

Merch
Sourcing sustainable fabrics, reducing design impact (less dyes, no bubble prints), streamlining production, reducing our shipping footprint and implementing greener practices at our merch stands
Show Production
Using energy efficient equipment, lighting and power
Freight
Working with our shipping providers to utilise cleaner burning fuel (SAF) and offset freight emissions
Hotels
Staying at hotels that commit to net zero emissions where available; donating unused toiletries
Transport
Using sustainable fuel options like HVO where possible (land travel) and SAF (air travel) for a portion of flights
Plastic reduction
Eliminate single-use plastic backstage at all possible venues; increased recycling programs at venues backstage and front of house; reusable utensils & foodware backstage and on buses; hydration station for fans on site
Catering & Food
Sourcing food from local farms, composting food waste, donating excess food to local organizations
Fan Travel
Encouraging modes of transport that emit less CO2e and offsetting additional emissions to make fan travel for the tour entirely carbon negative (or climate positive)
Sourcing sustainable fabrics, reducing design impact (less dyes, no bubble prints), streamlining production, reducing our shipping footprint, implementing greener practices at merch points of sale & encouraging garment circlarity

To address the unavoidable emissions that remain after our reduction plans are implemented, we will offset the tour’s CO2e through a mix of certified, credible, or verified projects and high quality nature and technology based solutions. Furthermore, we will invest in projects that will offset more than our measured carbon footprint to make our tour as climate positive as possible.

Metrics

The simplest way to quantify environmental impact to ensure a climate positive tour is through measuring our CO2e output from various key sources such as production transport, show energy and audience travel.

Here are some helpful definitions:

What Is Climate Positivity?

‘Climate Positivity’ is a term used to describe an individual, organisation or entity that takes action to remove or offset more CO2e emissions from the environment than it puts in. This term can be used interchangeably with ‘carbon negativity,’ since the net output of the overall CO2e emissions is negative.

What is CO2e?

'CO2e' stands for 'Carbon Dioxide Equivalent'. This is the universal unit of measurement used to indicate the global warming potential of each of the seven greenhouse gases, which include carbon dioxide (CO2) but also other gases like methane. Because each of these gases have different levels of climate change impact, CO2e allows us to quantify the impact of these gases in a consistent and measurable way. Put another way, CO2e refers to the number of metric tonnes of any greenhouse gas emissions with the same global warming potential as one metric tonne of CO2 emissions.

We will be using the data we collect as the tour progresses to ensure we are continually meeting the highest achievable standards of sustainability, as well as to inform our future plans and tours.

While the technologies and practices outlined in the plan may not be available in every market on the tour, we will address the following areas wherever possible in order to achieve our climate goals:

Merchandise

For this tour, Shawn has revamped the merch practices and the merch itself. From sourcing materials to reducing shipping routes to point-of-sale, we'll use green practices that reduce emissions and follow industry standards for sustainability.

Our merch practices for the tour will include the following initiatives:

Organic cotton
Tour merchandise will use organic cottons from farms and mills that manufacture sustainably. Compared to polyester, our cotton reduces emissions by 62% CO2e and has 50% less emissions than standard cotton.
Limited Merch Items
We will offer fewer merch items moving forward, reducing from 20 SKUs last tour to only 12 this year, focusing on best sellers in order to create less garment waste going and more efficient production processes.
Printing Practices
Merch will use less impactful design process, such as no bubble prints and less dyes. These changes will reduce toxic runoff and  water usage.
Increased Localization
We will produce merch locally wherever possible in order to reduce air freighting and overall travel emissions wherever possible. For example, Final US soft goods will only have a net travel footprint of 150 miles.
Eliminate Single Use Plastic
In order to reduce the amount of plastic going to landfills, we will not be offering plastic shopping bags at our merch booths.
Circularity
We are taking steps to increase a garment’s lifecycle and encourage circularity. More details to be announced soon!
Garment Suppliers
All soft goods sold in North America will be sourced from BTSA, a minority owned and operated company based in Compton, California. BTSA complies with honest labour compensation to ensure that product is never made through forced labour or underpaid wages.

This provides minority communities with honest opportunities to revive the full compensation they are owed under United States labor laws and wages.

Production

We’re carefully selecting resources, equipment, and vendors to help us create a big production with as small of a footprint as possible. Our plans include:

Efficient Power
We will use more efficient cables in order to cut down on energy usage. Our team has measured how much energy is used across the full production (lights, sound, etc.) and adjusted the system to maximise efficiency.
Efficient Lighting
The tour has swapped out lights for ultra efficient LED lights. High quality LED bulbs use at least 75% less energy, and last up to 25 times longer than standard lights. (Source)
Waste Reduction
We are electing not to use LED wristbands until a more sustainable solution is found.
Rechargeable Batteries
Our crew uses rechargeable battery packs and as well as energy efficient audio equipment & electronics to avoid battery waste. Unlike rechargeable batteries, single-use batteries have higher emissions, use more natural resources and most are not disposed of properly.
Streamlined Freighting
We will pack and freight our gear efficiently to use less space and fewer flights in order to reduce environmental impacts. We will work with our shipping companies to utilise cleaner burning fuel and offset the remaining emissions.

Lodging & Travel

For travel and lodging, we’ve audited our previous tours and implemented a plan to help limit emissions as well as stay with partners that have committed to carbon positivity.

Green Hotels
Our tour pledges to stay at hotels that are using renewable energy and commit to net zero greenhouse gas emissions where possible, and are transparent about their environmental efforts.
Toiletry Dontations
We will collect unused toiletries from hotel stays and donate them to local shelters for people in need. Due to sanitation concerns, these typically get discarded daily from every room when not used.
Alternative Fuel
For segments of air travel, we will purchase Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) made from renewable waste. Compared to standard fuel, SAF can reduce CO2e by 80% across its lifecycle.

What Is SAF?

A clean substitute for fossil-oil based aviation fuels. Rather than being refined from petroleum, SAF is produced from sustainable resources such as waste oils from a biological origin, agri residues, and even waste materials.

We will fuel our trucks and land transportation with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel where possible, a renewable source that helps reduce CO2 by up to 90% compared to standard fuel.

What Is HVO?

HVO fuel is a second-generation, synthetic, advanced biodiesel alternative that significantly reduces CO2 emissions and other harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxide (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. It is made from renewable materials such as plant byproducts and waste & residues.

Backstage & Venue

Backstage and in the concourse, we will be implementing the following practices to make what’s happening at every venue less wasteful on the day of the show:

Expanded Recycling
We are asking venues to provide recyclable aluminium water cans and implement their own recycling program & additional recycling bins.
Reusable Eatingware
Tour crew will receive reusable items such as bottles, mugs and silverware kits for use in catering and on buses. In addition, meals will be served to crew on reusable service ware.
Reusable Drinkware
Easy access hydration stations for all tour staff to help eliminate single use plastic at the show. There will also be reusable hot beverage containers and water bottles for band and crew.
Locally Sourced Food
We will source local food for the band and crew where possible. There will be both vegetarian and vegan options for all members of the crew. Food waste will be composted and excess will be donated to local organisations feeding people in need locally.
Fan Hydration Stations
The tour is carrying fan hydration stations for every show. Fans will be able to bring in safe, empty refillable water bottles, or make a donation to the tour’s environmental programs to receive a custom limited-edition Wonder: The World Tour Nalgene water bottle.
Composting

Climate Positivity

A primary goal of this tour is to reduce our environmental impact. We estimate we will be able to reduce our direct CO2 emissions by 50% per-show from the last world tour. While the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has called on organisations to target a 50% reduction in their carbon footprint by 2030, we pledge to do this within the span of one tour cycle.

To compensate for the unavoidable emissions that remain after our plans are implemented, we will offset all emissions created by the tour, its travel party, and fan travel to and from the venue. We will routinely calculate tour carbon emissions to ensure that our goals are being met and will select projects following the Oxford Principles for Net-Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting.

Through a mix of carbon avoidance and carbon removal projects, we will invest in programmes that will offset 15% above our predicted carbon footprint in order to make the tour Climate Positive (also known as Carbon Negative).

What Is Carbon Removal?

Carbon removals are offsets generated by projects that remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. Examples include biological carbon sequestration and nature based solutions (planting trees, soil carbon enhancement, etc.), bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), direct air capture with geological storage (DACCS), or converting atmospheric carbon back into rock through remineralisation. Removal projects are longer lasting, more permanent and have a lower risk of reversal.

We pledge to invest in Carbon Removal projects for all of our direct emissions in order to make the tour truly Climate Positive, by removing more CO2 emissions than are released.

What Is Carbon Avoidance?

Carbon avoidance projects contribute to climate action by preventing carbon that would have been released into the atmosphere. The benefits of carbon avoidance are usually short lived and often less permanent with a higher risk of reversal. Carbon Avoidance projects include: “renewable energy; avoiding emissions from fossil-fuel based alternatives; natural climate solutions, such as reforestation, avoided deforestation, or agroforestry; energy efficiency; and resource recovery, such as avoiding methane emissions from landfills or wastewater facilities; among others” (source)

We pledge to invest in Carbon Avoidance projects in order to offset the fan travel to and from our shows around the world through a combination of certified, credible, or verified projects and high quality nature and technology based solutions. On average, fan travel can account for anywhere from 70% to 90% of a tour’s total emissions.

Conservation & Carbon Offset Projects

Alongside our partners, we will be investing, donating and supporting various causes that offset emissions through a mix of Carbon Avoidance and Carbon Removal initiatives that cover five critically important areas of impact: rewilding & reforestation, oceans & blue carbon, power & energy, technology, and regenerative agriculture.

While climate change isn’t the only consideration in sustainability, we are tracking, reducing & offsetting our CO2e as it’s the most tangible way to measure environmental impact. The projects selected below will target CO2e directly, but also benefit other key parts of the puzzle like ocean acidification, freshwater use, land-system change and biosphere integrity.

CARBON REMOVAL PROJECTS

We have selected a range of high-quality nature based solutions that will negate the effects of climate change both on land and at sea. Each organisation and project has demonstrated high levels of additionality, permanence and is verified to internationally recognised standards.

In addition to nature-based removals, including regenerative cotton farming, we will also support the work of organisations using innovative technology solutions and to capture and store CO2.

CARBON AVOIDANCE PROJECTS

To combat climate change, we need to stop CO2 emissions at the source as well as removing what’s in the atmosphere. To tackle that we are selecting projects that avoid carbon emissions by stopping the use of fossil fuels, such as; wind farms, solar power and clean & efficient cookstoves in developing nations.

All these projects will be fully certified to the highest standards and provide both community and climate benefits.

Getting to the Show

Taking the lowest-emitting form of transport to your local show is best for the environment, where possible and safe. Here is a list of potential ways to get to your venue, ranked from lowest-emitting to highest-emitting, compared to single person car travel:

  1. Walking or cycling - carbon emissions free (100% lower than single-person car travel)
  2. Public transport - coach (84% lower)
  3. Public transport - trains, subway (80% lower)
  4. Carpooling (50% - 75% lower depending on the # of passengers)*
  5. Public transport - city / local buses  (40% lower)
  6. Taxis (13% lower)
  7. Car - single occupant
  8. Flying - coach (7% higher than single-person car travel)
  9. Flying - premium economy (31% higher)
  10. Flying - business (138% higher)
  11. Flying - first class (228% higher)

*From a purely journey by journey CO2e perspective, carpooling produces less emissions than some forms of public transport. While that is true to an extent, public transport is operating anyway, while car travel is additional and therefore burns fossil fuels that would not otherwise be used. Climate scientists will therefore typically recommend public transport as a first option, before carpooling. (Source)
